- Over half of those living in West and Central Africa cannot afford a healthy diet.
- Almost a quarter of households cannot afford a diet that meets their basic energy needs.
- About 14.5 million children under five years of age suffer from acute malnutrition.
In West and Central Africa, particularly in the Sahel, the nutritional situation remains extremely concerning, and despite ongoing efforts, the long-standing crisis has worsened in recent years. Recent Fill the Nutrient Gap (FNG) studies conducted between 2016 and 2024 in over 10 countries highlight economic barriers to adequate nutrition as a significant challenge.
The Fill the Nutrient Gap (FNG) analysis helps decision-makers identify the most effective, context-specific interventions to improve access to healthy, nutritious diets for vulnerable groups. Using local food prices and household expenditure data, diet costs and barriers to adequate nutrition are assessed through optimisation modelling. Conducted in collaboration with national stakeholders, FNG results inform policies and programmes across sectors such as social protection, health, food, agriculture, and education to enhance nutrition outcomes.
