Nearly half the world¡¯s undernourished population lives in Asia and the Pacific. By the end of 2023, 78 million people in the region faced acute food insecurity.
  • 24 to 66% of people cannot afford a healthy diet.
  • 1.66 billion people in Asia cannot afford a healthy diet.
  • 50% of children under five fail to grow adequately due to poor nutrition.

Despite economic growth and significant strides in poverty reduction, stunting and micronutrient deficiencies persist as a major public health challenge. The Fill the Nutrient Gap (FNG) analysis helps decision-makers identify the most effective, context-specific interventions to improve access to healthy, nutritious diets for vulnerable groups. Using local food prices and household expenditure data, diet costs and barriers to adequate nutrition are assessed through optimisation modelling. Conducted in collaboration with national stakeholders, FNG results inform policies and programmes across sectors such as social protection, health, food, agriculture, and education to enhance nutrition outcomes.
